Beauty has a multidimensional and often even contradictory resonance in contemporary art. Beauty is not merely the pursuit of harmony or “gentle” visuality, but one possible perspective or a consciously used effect. Shameless Beauty brings together six extraordinarily talented artists who have been inspired by the motifs and aesthetic ideals of the Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo and Romantic periods.
The exhibition combines two intertwined extremes: a shameless celebration of visual richness, attractiveness and sensory pleasure and an obscene glorification, even melancholy, of imperfection, crudity or incompleteness. Beauty is born from the skilful use of colour, light and space, which enables the artist to connect with the viewer, evoking aesthetic emotions, pleasure – or confusion.
The exhibition has received state funding from the Finnish Heritage Agency.
